Chimpanzee Trekking in Tanzania: Gombe and Mahale Complete Guid

Published:

Tanzania is famous for its savannah wildlife, but the country’s western shores of Lake Tanganyika hold a secret that few travelers discover: two of the world’s finest chimpanzee trekking destinations. Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains national parks offer rare, intimate encounters with wild chimpanzees in forest settings unlike anywhere else in Africa. Our chimpanzee trekking tours in Tanzania include expert local guides, park permits, and full logistics from Kigoma — where SafariBando has its own ground team.

Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe is Tanzania’s smallest national park, covering just 52 square kilometres of chimpanzee habitat on the steep slopes above Lake Tanganyika. It became world-famous as the site of Jane Goodall’s pioneering research, which began in 1960 and continues today. The chimps here are fully habituated — accustomed to human observers — making encounters relaxed, natural, and extraordinary.

The trek to find the chimpanzee communities typically takes one to three hours through dense forest. Once found, you spend one hour with the group observing them feed, play, groom, and interact. Rangers and guides accompany every trek for safety and maximum wildlife interpretation.

Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale is more remote than Gombe and arguably more spectacular. The park’s dramatic mountainous terrain rises steeply from Lake Tanganyika to 2,462 metres. It protects the largest remaining population of wild chimpanzees in Tanzania and is accessible only by boat or light aircraft from Kigoma.

The combination of chimpanzee trekking and the ability to swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika — the world’s second-deepest lake — makes Mahale utterly unique. No roads penetrate the park. It remains one of the most pristine wilderness areas in all of Africa.

Gombe vs Mahale: Which Should You Choose?

Gombe — more accessible, lower cost, Jane Goodall history, shorter treks

Mahale — more remote, larger chimp population, lake swimming, higher cost

Both — the ultimate western Tanzania experience; combine them in one itinerary

How to Get to Gombe and Mahale

Both parks are reached via Kigoma, a lakeside town on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. SafariBando has a permanent ground team based in Kigoma — making us one of very few operators who handle these treks directly rather than through subcontractors. We arrange all transfers, boat charters, permits, and accommodation from Kigoma.

Kigoma is accessible by domestic flight from Dar es Salaam and by the TAZARA railway — one of East Africa’s classic train journeys.

Combining Chimp Trekking with a Tanzania Safari

Many travelers combine their Gombe or Mahale experience with a classic Tanzania safari package in the northern or southern circuit parks. This gives you the full spectrum of Tanzania wildlife — from rainforest primates to Serengeti savannah. You can also pair it with a Zanzibar beach extension for a complete Tanzania journey.

For travelers interested in primate and forest wildlife more broadly, consider adding a southern Tanzania safari to include Mahale alongside Nyerere and Ruaha national parks.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Tanzania

Chimpanzee trekking is possible year-round in both parks. The dry season from June to October is generally preferred — trails are drier, lake water is calmer for boat travel, and the chimps spend more time at lower altitudes where they are easier to follow. The wet season from November to May brings lush green forest and fewer visitors.
